We invite you to a lecture by Dr. Andreas Mershin on the topic: Academia to Entrepreneurship (Lab to Market) and Beyond on the occasion of his partner visit to Slovakia. The lecture will be in English only.
When: 10th January 2024, 13:00 (Wednesday)
Where: Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of STU in Bratislava, Ilkovičova 3, Bratislava, lecture room CD150
We will discuss the recent progress made around the globe and by my group, in artificial olfaction diagnostics and mycotecture, the intersection of the two addressed also by the ongoing work of Vlasta Kubusova she has presented at Osmocosm ’22 and ’23 and elsewhere (IT collaboration with STU Bratislava). We’ll cover the basic challenges and opportunities we faced and are continuing to solve in deploying an experimental mycotecture farm and research outpost on the outskirts of arid Windhoek, Namibia. How recent advances in AI can be seen as a mirror to society and the new view of entrepreneurship in medical devices, encapsulated in the motto of “deploy or die” will be examined. This is meant to be an interactive lecture so bring your questions!

Dr. Andreas Mershin retired from academia this June, after 26 years of being a Principal Investigator -19 of them leading blue-sky research and practical development as Director of the MIT Label Free Research Group (2004- 2023). He has led research funded by the likes of US National Science Foundation (NSF), the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and GlasxoSmithKline and Standard Banking Group has taught MIT undergraduate and graduate classes in physics, molecular biophysics of olfaction and mycotecture. He has been teaching entrepreneurship, innovation and his well-known “Lab to Market the MIT Way” class all over the planet including for MIT Sloan Executive Education and Advanced Management Programs since 2014.
He has been granted several US and international patents and published numerous peer-reviewed papers in leading science journals on the topics of learning and memory, machine olfaction, biophysics of scent, photosynthesis and perceptual engineering. His work has been covered by global media in dozens of languages. He has been developing technologies that are used by established industry and startups he has co- founded. He is the president and co-founder of the public-benefit, non-profit Osmocosm Foundation, is a co-founder of MycoHab and the co-founder and Chief Science Officer of nascent startup RealNose - bringing the power of artificial (dog) intelligence and machine olfaction medical diagnostics to humanity. He is a private pilot and scuba diver.
